I think Ferguson is hilarious. I'll miss him when school starts up again. In the mean time I can watch this and smile... and sing along.

You Know What Really Grinds my Gears...
I wish that when I asked a question from a person, they would give me an answer - even if they answer may not be what I want to hear. You don't have to sugar coat it, it would just be nice to get the answer, especially when I'm making plans around it. This seems to be happening to me a lot lately. I end up switching things around or trying do something, and then it ends up being a waste of time. I doubt anyone reads this... but if you do and think this blog refers to you... it might, but not just you. Like I previously wrote, this seems to be happening to me a lot lately.
And that has been: You Know What Really Grinds my Gears...

Celeb Obsession
1) These people have never met the celebrities. Yes, I understand perhaps they made some type of impact on you tv, radio or even dare I say life, but where were all these so called 'friends/fans' when Jackson was being a fucking WACKO or Fawcett's family was either getting pulled over for DUIs or being slapped around? Those people were laughing at the late night jokes and judging, not caring. All of a sudden the celeb dies, and we pretend like they weren't the butt of jokes for the past two decade.
2) Is it really necessary to pretend you care? I can't tell you how many statuses on Facebook or people on Twitter were mentioning Jackson had died. God forbid I get my news from an actual news source, but I have to read about how everybody is so upset on social networks!?! You people, reread number 1.
3) (And this completely includes myself. I need a dose of my own medicine.) We all need to stop caring about celebs. Perhaps it's because we dream about the luxuries their life holds, or the idea of fame. Maybe it is because we don't have our own royal family or seeing people on the big screen makes us feel like we already know them. Maybe it's because we know anything filmed long enough will result in
In conclusion I think many many Americans are dumb, or at least heading towards brain mush. Our priorities are all over the place, mine included. I can't point out countries on a map, tell you the members on the supreme court, I don't even remember what I learned in Algebra. What I can do is tell you what channel the Soap network is while buying dvds online instead of reading a book and later going on facebook and become frustrated over people who feel that they needed to mention dying celebs in their social network status. My priorities needs to change. Our priorities need to change. This celeb obsession/fandom is ridiculous. And perhaps my biggest downfall: When all is said and done, and I don't feel like working my brain, I'll most likely watch a rerun of old school 90210. Over and out.

Poetry Break
The Difference of Citrus
Can I change shade
Transform smooth and spherical
Must I only be sweetened artificially
Even at my ripest I make others pucker
not followed by a kiss
but squinting of the eyes
tightening of cheeks
I don’t fill bellies
I don’t end hunger
My paradigm of sunshine, water and seed
result in sour, tart, uneasiness
Ah,
to be a comfort food,
eaten daily
In the nook table bowl,
not back fridge drawer
If our juices could be equal
If I had the chance
Yellow and green off the tree
but for my sanity
let me change in your hands
let me dream
let me be
the color and taste of orange

A Change Gonna Come is probably my favorite song. Sam Cooke has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. And although this isn't Cooke, Seal sure does this song justice:

TV Up/down-dates
DOWN: On the other hand, how sick am I of the show Lost now? End the show already or just leave them there to rot on the island. I can recall just a few seasons ago I would literally run to the tv to make sure I wouldn't miss a minute of it. Now change the channel for all I care.
And for a safe bet go and watch HOUSE. Whenever Amber comes back you know it's going to be a good episode.

Top 10
Top 10 Cary Grant Movies
I have gone on a Cary Grant kick lately. Thank you internet for putting almost all his classic films right at my fingertips. There are still a lot of his movies I have yet to see. But here is my top 10 list to date... I've seen about 30 of his films, but the guy did 72, so clearly I still have some watching to do.

10. An Affair to Remember
9. Arsenic and Old Lace
8. His Girl Friday
7. Only Angels Have Wings
6. Notorious
5. Bringing Up Baby
4. To Catch a Thief
3. Holiday
2. The Awful Truth
1. Charade
Still need to watch: Gunga Din, My Favorite Wife, Topper, I Was A Male Order Bride, Houseboat, Operation Petticoat, Slyvia Scarlett and a few more. If anyone finds those online, please let me know.
And I know I know... how could I leave North by Northwest and The Philadelphia Story off. Well I did. That doesn't mean I dislike the movies or any other movie I did not mention. So calm down. I love all things Cary Grant

The Reel Thing
Youtube officially sucks. I had tried multiple times to upload my reviews and it kept coming up 'unknown error.' I finally tried google and what do ya know... things worked out. On the down side, I read google is deleting their video portion soon. Lame again. But here it is about 3 weeks late.
My review of Watchmen for Gavilan's News and Views 3/10/09. (Also a quick pick of Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas)

Really? REALLY?
The only thing I can remember always having an interest in is movies. I'll admit it, I'm a movie snob. If you mention a film I usually want to throw in my two cents. I like to know behind the scenes secrets. I'm always interested in trivia and budgets and who starred in what- and if they were in a movie with so and so and did they get along etc etc... The point is, I don't know everything about film, but I know more than your average Joe, especially for someone my age. Which brings me to why I'm a movie snob. I cannot wrap my brain around why people nowadays pay 10 dollars to see the same comic book paradigm or mindless garbage with mall cops. Why does someone whose career is based on the words 'git-r-done' get a movie to himself? (That question is rhetorical.)
Today we just finished watching Fatal Attraction in my Contemporary Film class. First of all, I wasn't a big fan of the movie, although I do think it does a wonderful job making Glenn Close into the craziest psycho bitch on earth. The acting was great, the story was interesting. I found it hard to get over the 80's hair, clothes- pretty much everything- but basically I wouldn't want to watch the movie again. Yet if someone were to ask me what I thought of the film, I would most likely be able to explain clearly why I thought the film was such a hit, and why Glenn Close couldn't get a date for a decade.
However, the kids in my class, their idea of reviews were, 'I'm glad that bitch got shot.' 'Why does the daughter look like a boy?' 'Yo that shits crazy.' Really? REALLY? That's what you would like to add to the discussion?
Yes this is Morgan Hill, and I don't think I'm going out on a line when I say that the leaders of tomorrow most likely aren't coming from Gavilan Community College. But these kids supposedly graduated from high school?!? Perhaps they are not infatuated with movies like I am, but is it too much to ask that they use full sentences? Is it really impossible to have a conversation about the movie and not just remarks about how you would have stabbed/shot her extra times insuring she was dead? I realize that this is what they have learned watching horror films from today, and I guess in a way they are comparing and contrasting. Be that as it may, listening to what they are passing off as a discussion almost was enough to walk out on or choke myself with my scarf of the day. Am I being a bit dramatic? Probably. I just can't help but think our generation is in serious need of maturity and brain cells, even if the conversation is just about movies.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no Einstein. I guess I just get a bit more sensitive when it comes to movies than others. Thus ends my ranting and raging.

What to do...
I turn 23 in May. Ugh. 23 is a boring and unimportant birthday age. My birthday just happens to fall on May 24, which is always memorial day weekend. It being a long weekend going places seem to be more expensive. I want to go somewhere for the three day weekend but I can't leave early since graduation is on the 22nd. I'm not sure what to do seeing as I'm trying to save money, but I would love to go somewhere - escape from Morgan Hill. What to do? I think I'll just wait till May rolls around and see if there are any cheap flights anywhere. Why must nyc be so far away?

The Reel Thing
Soooo, this is what I did in my TV Production class today. It's my overview of the Oscars and review of the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic. It's hard for me to watch it, I can't help but wonder if it's only me who thinks I sound nasal-y or if other people hear it too. Anyway, here is the second clip of the semester. My first "The Reel Thing" was on Slumdog Millionaire and didn't have the cool opening and lower thirds Jesus made. If I find it I'll put it up.
Also on a side note, not to be super superficial... but why must youtube pick a ridiculous still to have for this clip???

And the Oscar goes to...
Oscars on Sunday. Pretty much one of my favorite nights of the year. Very excited for Hugh Jackman, red carpet, acceptance speeches etc. This year I managed to see all the best pictures so here goes my list of who I think should win and who will win.
Best Picture
Should Win- Slumdog Millionaire
Will Win- Slumdog Millionaire
This movie was by far the most original and entertaining movie of the year. If someone mentions that Benjamin Button should win I'll have to slap a bitch. That movie was Forest Gump in reverse and I don't understand why there is so much hype, unless its for makeup. By the way, runner up should be Milk. Make sure you see that.
Best Actor
Update: Just watched The Wrestler. Rourke is great. Totally understand if he wins.
Should Win: Sean Penn
Will Win: Micky Rourke
Honestly I didn't see The Wrestler. But I've heard that Hollywood loves comebacks and this would definitely be considered a comeback. Again I'm going to mention Sean Penn. One of the best performances I've ever seen him in. I think this performance is way better then even Mystic River, in which he won best actor. Also, sometimes Hollywood doesn't choose to let the same people win over and over. Apparently there is a lot of politics involved. By the way Frank Langella pulls out a kick ass over the phone monolouge as Dick. I'm very glad he got a nod.
Best Actress
Should Win: Kate Winslet
Will Win: Kate Winslet
SHE OWNS THIS. The girl has been nominated for an Oscar 6 times. Although this isn't my favorate performace of her, (I loved her in Eternal Sunshine) Kate in The Reader is phenominal. I couldn't imagine another actress being able to take on this role like Kate did. It's funny, she herself has mentioned that she seems to get nominated for whatever roll she's nude in. I guess when you got it flaunt it. And by some off chance she doesn't win, I'm rooting for the perfect Meryl Streep or newcomer Anne Hathway.
Best Supporting Actress
Should Win: Viola Davis
Will Win: Penelope Cruz
I thought Penelope was Vicky Christina Barcelona. If she wasn't in it, there would just be an annoying Scarlett Johannson bickering with an Spanish guy and a English girl. Viola Davis has a very small scene in Doubt, but she delivers. The woman's performance can convince you that her son should continue to be molested by a long nailed priest. Yup, shes that good. In fact every person in film delivers, go see it.
Best Supporting Actor
Should Win: Don't really care
Will Win: Heath Ledger
Honestly we all know Heath Ledger is going to win. Even though it's nice to honor him and his work in film, I wonder if he would still be winning if he was alive. None of the other nominees really got any press this year, which is why I think Ledger has it in the bag. However, Michael Shannon in Revolutionary Road was intreguing and matched the character in the book well. The acting in that whole movie was overlooked.
Best Director
Should Win: Danny Boyle
Will Win: Danny Boyle
Have you seen that movie? Well if you did then you know why he should win. Although props to Gus Van Sant. And even though I didn't think much of Benjamin Button, David Fincher did take on a epic type movie, so I guess props to him too.
And...
I really hope In Bruges wins for Best Original Screenplay, such a entertaining story and witty banter in that movie.
Also I have no idea what The Changling is doing being nominated in any of the catagories. Anglina is so flat and Clint Eastwood should have definitly campaigned for Gran Tornio instead.
So that's it, don't forget to watch on Sunday... I hope I'm not disapointed.

Can't Sleep List
Leah's Top 5 Disney Movies
5. Mulan
4. Beauty and the Beast
3. Little Mermaid
2. Lion King
1. Aladdin
I picked Aladdin because all the songs are awesome and throughout the movie Disney included material adults would find entertaining while still being age appropriate. The movie is hilarious and it was made at a time when Robin Williams was still funny. Lion King is a classic... I mean it's Hamlet right? Every girl loves the Little Mermaid. And if you don't, you probably suck at life. Beauty and the Beast was nominated for Best Picture. Were you aware of that? Sad it lost to Silence of the Lambs. And I know many might not agree with Mulan. But that's probably because you guys are racist against Asians. Get over it. Mulan was great! Correction: is great! You don't meet a girl like that every dynasty.

I Wish My Life Was a Musical
I love musicals. I mean I love them. If I was talented my dream would be to sing and dance on Broadway. My problem is I can't sing to save my life and I have two left feet. I choose to blame my parents for this. Although they were supportive by enrolling my sister and I in "creative arts" programs, their genetics passed to us didn't really help in performing arts. If I were auditioning for American Idol I would be one of the bloopers edited into some horrible montage in the first week of the series. Not to say I haven't tried improving my performing 'skills'... kind of. About 4 years ago I tried tap dancing... FAIL. When I was 7 I had the courage to perform in two elementary school musicals Harlequin and Burning Rice Fields. I played an angel in one and a kite runner/log carrier in the other. Then puberty hit and that was the end of my acting career. So performing isn't my calling. But I can't help it, I love musicals and I want to be in them, but it's not going to happen.Although some shows are better than others, there is nothing like being entertained for 2 hours with catchy songs and huge dance scenes. Living in NYC I had time to win lottery tickets where the seats would only be 25 dollars. My luck was amazing for these shows. I won the Wicked tickets my first weekend there, some strangers offered us the Phantom tickets for FREE, and the fact that I got to see the others made my year. I got to see:
Hairspray (Loved it!)
Chicago (Just okay)
Ave Q (Hilarious)
Putnum Annual Spelling Bee (perhaps my favorite of all, so original and funny)
Phantom of the Opera (played out)
Rent (ehhhh)
Drowsey Chaperone (not worth the money)
Chorus Line (ehhhhh x2)
Wicked (liked it)
So the fact that I'm living in Morgan Hill kind of sucks. Unfortunately, American Musical Theater of San Jose just closed down about a month ago (I really wanted to intern there.) So there hasn't been too much musical influence in my life lately. I still try to keep up with The Great White Way. I would love to see Billy Elliot, Jersey Boys, South Pacific, Lion King and Little Mermaid (ya, I'm a Disney fan). But for now here is just a bit of musical fun that made me smile.
Also I loved this as well. I can't help but smile watching it. Life should be like this:

A Room Without A View
I love my current room. I fixed it up when I moved back from NYC two years ago. It used to be a crazy under the sea theme with midnight blue on two walls and grasshopper green on the others. I picked out these colors when I was 12 and going through a not-using-my-brain phase. The room was furnished with a bed frame that my Nana got me when I was 3 and there were key chains hanging from the wall and a fake parrot from the high ceiling. This was most definitely not a room I wanted to come back to. With my helpful painting skills I picked up from City Year I am glad to say that my room is now a beautiful shade of straw hat yellow with a chair and ottoman in the corner, finally a bed that is larger than a twin size, and drapery, bedding and furniture to match. I love my room. However, one thing I do wish I had was my NY roomies keeping me company. While living in New York City I shared a studio with some amazing gals. I'll avoid the disastrous losers we had along the way in order to pick up some rent money. But these ladies made my year there a great one, even if our studio was small and had no view of the beautiful city whatsoever (unless you count the apt across the ally). And seeing as I am horrible keeping in touch with them unless via texting or facebook, I thought I'd also give them a little recognition on this blog and mention why they are so great. (In no particular order)
#1 Lindsay Sablan:

This girl was my friend right from the start. Being an islander herself and a fanatic of musicals she understood me right from the beginning. Although it took her a little while to move in with us, it was destined for her to become a Gold St Girl. This girl is 'fiercely loyal' (her words, but I do agree 100%.) She also is talented like no other. EVERYBODY LOOOOOOVES LINDSAY. For real, sometimes she can be too nice for her own good. But she does have an amazing family and plenty of friends to support her. Sometimes you wish you were Lindsay, but if you were then you wouldn't have her for a friend. Not to mention she let me use her food stamps for the summer. Clearly two female, islander, twenty somethings always look alike and therefore there is no need to question whose food stamps belong to who. So thank you Lindsay for providing me with free pizza bagles and wine for over a month. Anywhoo, when she gets married she has promised me that I get a bridesmaid spot. Score! And despite the picture on the right, she is ridiculously photogenic.
#2 Sara
Lepori:Ohhhh, Lepori. She and I have one thing in common that most people don't think about anymore. But I won't mention what that is. If you want to know what kind of person she is, just look to her parents. They are the most welcoming people, and I definitely took advantage of their cooking skills. Sara is such a fun person. She is so outgoing and willing to be adventurous. I think that is what I like about her most. She is also the queen of traveling, in my opinion. If I had to travel around the world with anyone for days on end I would pick Sara. The girl is funny and makes a great Broadway lottery buddy. (By the way, Drowsy Chaperon is so not worth it, we learned that the hard way.) On the other hand she has waaaaay more energy than I do and sometimes I don't think I could keep up with her. But she always tries to include everyone and make others happy. She is a great friend and I miss our LOST nights at the gym. Oh, and speaking of bridesmaids, this girl has been to so many weddings. She either has a lot of really close friends or is the ultimate wedding crasher. And FYI, our faces are now stuck like that.
#3 Sarah Smethie:

Smethie. Poor Smethie. There were so many Sara(h)s that year that she was forced to become Smethie. But I wouldn't want to know her any other way. Smethie is the epitome of nice. Really, she is so kind to everyone. Smethie always seems to have everything under control. She has such a good heart and head on her shoulders. She takes responsibility for more than she needs to, she is most definitely a giver. The first time I met her on the subway she was so easy to talk to and get along with. The girl is so humble about how smart and talented she is, but if you get to know her she is also gut-bustingly (I don't think that's a real word) funny. However, there is one thing about Smethie that is deceiving: If that girl gets drunk she turns into a profanity spewing machine. It is hilarious! She could cuss out a pirate if she was hammered... but then of course she would then fall asleep on the poop deck. The girl gets tired. If I am ever in a bad mood, I look at this picture and it makes me smile.
Honorable Mention Tiffany Hamill:
I wish she was our roommate that year. Sadly Tiff lived all the way up in Harlem, so I had to convince her to stay at our place a couple of nights to hang out. I needed Tiffany that year for one parti
cular thing: to hold my hand in extremely awkward moments. And trust me, there were many! Tiffany is so sweet and I had so much fun with her on weekends going to Young Heroes and out at night. Just the two of us use to hit up the town and I could always trust her to take care of me and vice versa. I could just walk around the city forever with this girl. I miss our trips to the Great Lawn. We were queens of napping and tanning. She was the other half to my black and white cookie. Which I have yet to find here in California by the way, what's up with that? I miss this girl... Oh, and she can wear heels for hours like nobodies business. And so, to conclude this blog: As much as I love my current room with its privacy, and bigger bed, and bigger bathroom, and closet, and chair and ottoman, AND CABLE!! (trust me I spend a lot of time in here so I really do love it) I really do miss my old roomies and that Gold St apt. They made life exciting, and made me happy.
Oh, and as for Rex (Darren the liar) and Maggie (the lush) who both had no idea how to work an alarm clock, as Tina Fey said, you guys can SUCK IT.

In the beginning...
I feel like a hypocrite creating a blog. I think it's a bit pretentious to think that people will actually want to look at this site and see what I am up to. But I guess I am falling in with the times, or at least trying to keep myself occupied from going into the kitchen and eating brownies.
So who am I?
My name is Leah. Not like the princess or asian last name. Pronounced LEE-ah. You would be surprised how many times people get that wrong even after I correct them politely, a-many-a-times. In fact it was about one week from finals when my TV Production teacher (who I have been working with for over 3 months) called me Lee. How nice it is to know that I leave a lasting impression...
If you haven't met me before let me tell you a bit about myself: First of all I'm surprised that you are still reading. I never really find myself that interesting unless I'm around people who get me. One of those people is my sister Cara. Pronounced CAR-ah. Mispronouciation goes hand in hand with Cara's name. Our parents were big on short names. She is my twin. Perhaps the smarter of the two of us, she is going to be a teacher... if anyone hires her. CALLING ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS- MY SISTER CARA CAN TEACH CLASSES FROM K-6TH GRADE.

As for me my life has taken a bit of a turn. I got through my parents divorce, loss of a half-sister, evil stepmother (and by evil I mean Mormon), high school, spending a ridiculous amount of my life in a car, encephalitis, being super thin...then not, New York City and ended up in Morgan Hill. Yay my life! (sarcasm) I'll probably include that every now and then. Don't get me wrong, I have lived a very privliaged life and I know that I am very lucky.
If by chance I offend anyone reading this I apologize, but I also suggest you don't continue reading seeing as at times I am considered "sarcastic" or "cynical" or "too fond of stereotypes." I also make myself laugh quite easily. I am a nice person, really. In fact I try to make people like me... One thing I dislike most is tension and any type of awkwardness. Not only do I get embarrassed for myself but others too. It's something I'm trying to get over. But again, I stick with people who understand me. But don't most people do that anyway?
*Update: I couldn't hold back and I went to get myself a brownie...corner piece. In fact I could really love one of these:
Morgan Hill is a small 3 highway exit city with the population of conservatives and Mexicans. Take that how you wish. I work at a Starbucks and pretend I know details about coffee when people ask for my opinion. My opinion is coffee taste like dirt. Or "earthy" I have learned. I go to Gavilan Community College in Gilroy. I found that community college is a great self esteem booster. There are a lot of dumb people there. And not that I am brilliant, or talented, or amazing in any sense, but there are a lot of dumb people there. I hope to transfer to San Jose State next year and enter their Film/Radio/Television major. I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with my life career wise, but I hope to make some type of impact. Lately I have been thinking about writing, although I don't really know too much about it and I don't think it comes easily for me... so maybe not. However, lately I have been having strange dreams and have woken up thinking that they would be interesting films. And then of course I would forget what happened. But those subconcious thoughts remind me I have some creativity in me, even if I am only sleeping.
Lets end this post seeing as it's running long. I'll end by explaining the title. "Tiger Power." A bit obscure, but the story behind it is from my father. When my sister and I used to go bike riding in Oakland, whenever we got tired trying to ride up a big hill our dad would start yelling 'tiger power, tiger power.' It usually didn't pump us up like it was suppose to, but I remember it from my childhood as something that was funny and made me smile. Hopefully this blog won't be full of bitching and complaining, instead random thoughts and things I find funny and make me smile.
Here's to 2009. Thanks for reading.
